US Passport Photo

Live guides and checks for the U.S. State Department photo rules. Everything runs on your phone; no photo is uploaded.

Before you start

  • Stand about 2 ft in front of a plain, light-colored wall.
  • Face a window or soft light so there are no shadows on your face.
  • Remove glasses, hats, headphones, and anything covering your hair or face. (The app can't check these, so check them yourself.)
  • Keep a neutral face with your mouth closed and both eyes open, looking straight at the camera.
  • Best results: have someone else take it with the back camera from about 4 ft away. Arm's-length selfies can distort your face.
